A sweltering sun did not stop members of the Tea Party from gathering in Beverly Gardens Park on Sunday afternoon, cheering, waving flags and passing out literature as emcee Pat Boone, conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart, Congressional hopefuls and Revolutionary-garbed “patriots” spoke, sang and rallied more than four hundred supporters of the Beverly Hills Tea Party.
A marching band with drums, flutes and three-corner hats began the event with a Patrick Henry impersonator taking the stage and reciting an abridged version of the “give me liberty or give me death” speech made famous by Henry in 1775.
“There is no longer any room for hope,” ‘Henry’ said. “If we mean to preserve inviolate those inestimable privileges for which we have been so long contending–we must fight! I repeat it, sir, we must fight!”
The impassioned oratory was followed by a pledge of allegiance and host Boone, a self-titled “rooting, tooting, flag waving American,” who spoke to the crowd about the group’s message before singing his new song “I Am An American,” a new piece written for the occasion.
“This is not a republican thing or democrat thing, this is a citizen thing,” Boone told the crowd.
As Boone prepared for the song, technical difficulties sparked him to say “I knew we’d be sabotaged today in Beverly Hills, are you kidding?” It was unclear whether or not he was joking, but soon thereafter, audio stabilized and he began singing, resuming his chipper attitude.
